Morning: Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Today is the highlight of your Rwanda safari.

After an early breakfast, drive to the park headquarters. You will register and attend a briefing from the Rwanda Development Board guides and trackers.

You will then begin your trek through the beautiful forests of Volcanoes National Park.

The length of the trek depends on the location and movement of your assigned gorilla family. The terrain can be steep in some areas, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful.

As you walk through the forest, experienced trackers will look for signs of gorilla activity. These may include footprints, feeding areas and broken vegetation.

When you find the gorillas, you will have an unforgettable opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat.

You may see adults feeding, young gorillas playing and mothers caring for their infants. You may also watch the dominant silverback as he protects and interacts with his family.

You will have a designated time to observe and photograph the gorillas. Your guide will ensure that you follow the park’s conservation guidelines throughout the experience.

After the trek, return to the park headquarters. You will then travel back to your lodge for lunch and some time to relax.

Afternoon: Dian Fossey Museum

Later in the afternoon, visit the Dian Fossey Museum.

The museum celebrates the life and conservation work of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. Her research played an important role in increasing knowledge about mountain gorillas and their behavior.

During the visit, you will learn about her research, conservation efforts and experiences in the Virunga Mountains.

The museum also provides useful background to your gorilla trekking experience. It helps you understand the history of gorilla research and the importance of protecting these remarkable animals.

They are also active and playful. Unlike gorillas, they often move quickly through the bamboo forest. Following them can therefore be an exciting and dynamic experience.

During the trek, you may see golden monkeys feeding, jumping between bamboo stems, grooming each other and moving through the forest.

Your guide and trackers will help you understand their behavior, habitat and conservation needs.

After the trek, return to the park headquarters and meet your safari guide.
